Acne is described as a chronic skin disorder in which the hair follicles will become blocked and/or inflamed. There exist several variants of acne that ranges from mild to severe acne. The most common acne type is known to be acne vulgaris (vulgaris means common), which is a common inflammatory skin disease with inflammatory or non-inflammatory lesions. Acne appears mostly on the face, but can also appear on the chest, back, and upper arms. Although it is usually not considered a dangerous medical condition, it can cause psychological distress and also even leads to skin scarring. Teenagers are the mostly affected group with around 85% of 16-18-year-olds believed to have some form of acne. The diet and nutrient intake will determine the overall health of an individual. The food that is rich in refined carbohydrates increases insulin, which results in hormonal problems, promoting acne formation.

Market Overview

The global Acne market is valued at million US$ in 2018 and will reach million US$ by the end of 2026, grown at a CAGR of x% during 2018-2026. More than 90% of the global population is known to be affected by acne at some point in their life. The global acne market represents a small fraction of total dermatology market and both over the counter drugs, and prescription drugs are used to treat acne. The acne market is primarily genericized and is moderately served by the currently marketed major prescribed drugs including Solodyn, Doryx, and Epiduo. The US market is the largest market for global acne products with about 60 million suffering from acne in the country. Thus, there is an increase in the adopting acne cure products that help in driving the overall market.

Dermatologists prefer to treat skin diseases through the use of topical applications or less invasive procedures compared to surgical methods. Usually, laser treatments offer a permanent solution for skin problems that reduce the growth of facial hair and pigmentation issues. To permanently minimize the occurrence of acne, clinicians suggest the use of combination therapy as a topical antibiotic with a retinoid. The currently available therapeutic options for acne treatment include several approaches such as antibacterial washes, retinoids, antibiotic pills, pulsed-light therapies, lasers, photodynamic therapy, and systemic isotretinoin. Differin gel, Onexton (clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide), Altreno are some of the FDA approved treatments for different types of acne. The acne product pipeline consists of a diverse set of molecules showing a majority of products in early-stage development, comprises a total of 64 programs at various stages of clinical development, 41 percent of products found to be in the preclinical and discovery stage.

The global acne market is set to experience favorable growth driven by factors such as an increase in the youth population, the rise in health care expenditure, and an upsurge in disposable income, and growth in a sedentary lifestyle. The technological advancements, increasing awareness programs about acne, and the rising preference for minimally invasive procedures are the major trends that are observed in this market. However, the growth of this market is constrained by challenges such as the entry of generic drugs, stringent regulations, and side effects of acne therapies.
