HIV is a complex RNA virus of the genus Lentivirus within the Retroviridae family. According to a recent UNAIDS report, there were estimated to be 36.7 million people across the globe living with HIV at the end of 2015. Of these infected individuals, an estimated 18.2 million (or 49.6%) were accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART) by mid- 2016. The global annual rate of new HIV infections was estimated at 2.1 million (or 5.7% of total) in 2015, with 1.1 million AIDS-related deaths (or 2.9% of total) in the same year
